Do you need an attorney if you have been accused of a felony?

YES. It is unwise to proceed in a felony case without the assistance of an attorney. You may choose to have a public defender appointed to represent you or you may retain a private attorney.

A felony is a serious crime. If you are accused of a felony, the possible penalties that you face include prison time and fines in excess of $10,000. Your conviction will have to be disclosed when applying for most jobs. You will lose the ability to own or possess a firearm. You will lose the right to vote. When you are stopped by a police officer, the officer will pull up your felony record and immediately see that you are a convicted felon.

The outcome of your case may very well depend on which attorney you select to represent you.

In most felony cases, the judge will require your appearance at different stages of the case. In some circumstances, your attorney can request permission to appear on your behalf. Make sure that you understand when you must appear and when your appearance may be waived. You do not want to be charged with a failure to appear in addition to the original charges.

The outcome of your case may very well depend on which attorney you select to represent you. A skilled attorney will investigate your case and look for possible defenses to the charges. A skilled attorney will listen to you. A skilled and knowledgeable attorney will look for the best possible resolution for you. If there is no defense, a skilled attorney will negotiate with the district attorney to reduce the charges or reduce the amount of jail and/or prison time. A skilled attorney will look for alternatives for you.
